In November, I came across another such device. "Stress gone in 5 minutes!" it proclaimed. As a researcher who helps professionals daily with HRV-driven insights, I know these claims don't hold up.
But what is actually true? And more importantly: what really works?
The Vagus Nerve: Fascinating, But No Magic Bullet
The vagus nerve (wandering nerve) is indeed an important part of our autonomic nervous system. This nerve plays a crucial role in communication between the brain and organs, influencing heart rate, breathing, and stress response, among other things.
The problem? That quick 'reset' you see everywhere on social media is pure marketing.
What Does Science Say?
Let's look at the facts.
What IS true:
Medical vagus nerve stimulationVery expensive medical devices (only available through physicians) show cautious positive results for specific conditions like epilepsy, depression, and post-stroke rehabilitation. These devices are implanted and work very differently from commercial variants.
Breathing exercisesYes, breathing exercises can reduce stress. But the effect is temporary and requires a lot of consistent repetition. You need to apply them daily for lasting results.
Manual vagus nerve resetsThese exercises show little to no measurable effect, even though people feel temporarily better. This temporary feeling is often confused with actual stress reduction.
What is NOT true:

The Real Problem: Treating Symptoms Instead of Causes

But as professionals, we have a responsibility to distinguish between what's trending and what's proven to work. Between what's fast and what's effective.
Real stress reduction requires:
Time - no quick fix, but a process
Insight - objective data about what's happening in your body
Personalization - an approach that fits YOUR situation
Consistency - structural changes instead of temporary relief

Can you reset stress in 5 minutes? No.
Can you learn to manage stress in a sustainable, effective way? Absolutely.
But that starts with letting go of the illusion of the quick solution, and embracing a data-driven, personal approach.
